27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (5)

The idea of the movie does not fit into a whole daily life situation, life outside the modern surroundings. Sylvie shows Ruthie that there is life, a big and more to this life than outside the town of Thunderbone. There is a whole thing out there calling just the people like them.

It is an ideal direction by Bill, balancing both tragedy and humor. The portrayal of Christine is best for her. She does it well to convey her emotions and urges to just go out there. A must-watch for people who are stuck somewhere and want to get out.

Clockers

The movie is based on Richard Price’s novel adopted by Spike Lee. The novel is less fancy and not his best job, but Spike managed to pull the last of the pages in an electric manner.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (11)

The movie is piled by the cast, including John Turturro, Isaiah Washington, Harvey Keitel, and Delroy Lindo. The plot is based on small drug dealers during the shortage of drugs, which is very similar to The Wire.

This scarcity puts a colorful lens on the plot and its characters. Spike’s emphatic and on-point directing skills put the drama on an elevator. Performances by all the cast fuel the emotions and provide the required backing to the plot.

The Word’s Fastest Indian

You must have seen Anthony Hopkins in many movies, but he got famous as Hannibal Lecter. On the contrary, he gives a soothing and warming performance by playing Burt Munro, who was a real-life motorcycle legend. He set a record in 1967 on land by using a handmade 1920 Indian motorcycle.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (13)

It is a motivational movie and pushes you to never give up on your dreams, even if it looks a far cry. Anthony has always done a good job, and he always turns a bland story into an alive on-screen display by turning it into pure gold. By the end of the movie, you will be cheering for Burt on his motorcycle.

A Bronx Tale

If you love gangster movies, A Bronx Tale will hit you right home. If you like method acting and love, Robert de Niro, then this movie is perfect for your taste.

The movie was based in 1960, and things were pretty hard for Lorenzo, De Niro’s character, who has a conflicted son, Calogero, played by Lillo Brancato. He has become friends with Lorenzo’s big man, Sonny, played by Chazz Palminteri.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (15)

The kid has choices to make now as he is stretched between his moral self and other life decisions, all in a world of gangsters and monsters. The plot of the movie will not get more real than this.

Admiration and the tragic plot will make you feel a lot of emotions and then will last with you even after the movie has ended and will hit you with profound afterthoughts.

Collateral

It is one of those movies from Tom Cruise that can be revisited again and again. Michael Mann delivers a plot in the best manner with some new hooks also h the way. If we compare Heat to Collateral, it is a bit less pondering and smaller.

The movie happens in a cab that is claustrophobic; the driver, played by Jamie Fox, is a limousine driver who is aspiring. The lifting of the suspense is done by Tom Cruise’s intense character, who is a contract killer and pushes Fox across LA for a hell-bent night filled with rampage.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (16)

The name ‘Collateral’ may give you the idea that it is a heist movie, but it is not. It was Michael Mann’s sight when he loved adding soundtracks to the scenes. Even to this day, the movie feels relevant and works in a heavy viewing by including the director’s flair of being middle staged.

The movie came out in 2004, and back then, blending the first gen digital cameras with old styles of film stocks was not possible. But when you see the frames in the movie, you will see digital grain with soap-style delivery, which gives an unsettling vibe to the whole movie and, given that the full movie was shot in the dark, makes it more somber for the viewers.

After directing Heat, Michael got more into cinema verite with more close hand-held video shots. That can be seen in his 1999 movie The Insider, and you already know what he does when the sun goes down in LA.

  • Released in:2004
  • Runtime:2 Hours
  • IMDB Score:7.5
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, Bruce McGill, and many others

Ronin

Ronin, directed by John Frankenheimer, is the closes alternative to Heat. The movie stars Robert De Niro, a thief who is an expert, and Sam, played by Bobby D, who is a corrupt ex-officer. He uses his spyware but is not familiar with all that sense of honor thing as he is planning a crime with a team of crooks.

This makes the audience support Sam even more. The first scene in the movie tells the meaning of “Ronin,” and they are forced to work as a hired swordsman. The story of Ronin will make you feel like an anti-hero. They have lost their purpose in American Empire but not their honor as a knight.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (17)

As the film is filled with spy elements, there is plenty of backstabbing, and Sam, even under pressure, plays cool, which makes him more likable. When the movie came out in 1998, the critics did not find it, and you will agree with them if you have seen the previous work of Michael Mann.

It may feel that it lacks the stylish approach, and even the plot of the movie will feel rushed, but it gives you a taste of what Heat does.

  • Released in:1998
  • Runtime:2h 1m
  • IMDB Score:7.2
  • Cast: Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Natascha McElhone, Sean Bean, Katarina Witt, Stellan Skarsgård, Jonathan Pryce, Michael Lonsdale, Skipp Sudduth, Jan Tříska, Féodor Atkine, Amidou, Laurent Spielvogel, and many others

The Thomas Crown Affair

If Heat was gritty, The Thomas Crown Affair was fancy. The movie stars James Bond, and I mean the charismatic spy Pierce Brosnan in the remake of a 1968 movie. Pierce plays a wealthy Englishmen who is a thief and steals expensive set pieces for fun.

The Charm is very similar to James Bond, the movie is categorized under the Neo-noir category, but there is not anything dark about the movie.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (18)

The Thomas Crown Affair is a twisting and bending of plot mechanics rather than plain old stylishness, and the screenplay is constructed in a manner that gives you a sense of belief that whatever they’re showing is actually possible.

For some, it has a romantic angle to it. Rene Russo tries to locate the crown in more than one way. But as always, it is not easy to catch an expert thief who loves art and knows how to steal it. It was an underrated flick, but it is a good entertainer, which should definitely be checked out.

  • Released in:1999
  • Runtime:1h 53m
  • IMDB Score:6.8
  • Cast: Faye Dunaway, Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo, Ben Gazzara, Denis Leary, Fritz Weaver, Charles Keating, Frankie Faison, Mark Margolis, Pat Friedlander, Cynthia Darlow, Melissa Maxwell, and many others

The Town

We know Ben Affleck is a good actor, but when it comes to directing, he is one of the best out there. 2010’s The Town is directed by Ben Affleck. He plays the same character that Robert De Niro played in The Heat. John Hamm is the good FBI guy in the movie.

This movie will feel authentic if you have not watched Heat. Of course, the character of a loose canon is played aptly by Jeremy Renner.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (19)

He is Affleck’s bestie who rides or dies, who looks out for him during the heist just in case of anything goes awry. Renner is loyal but a sociopath and cannot be relied upon. He is the only nail in the best-laid-out plans.

You will surely forget about Heat while watching this one. By now, Mann has preferred the vision of heist movies, and Ben also deserves big credit for this one.

He directed the movie, but he also wrote the script along with Peter Craig and Aaron Stockard. Because of all three of them plot is a melody with no loose ends and a satisfying ending.

  • Released in:2010
  • Runtime:2h 4m
  • IMDB Score:7.5
  • Cast: Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Pete Postlethwaite, Jon Hamm, Titus Welliver, Chris Cooper, Owen Burke, and many others

Casino

It is also a heist movie that explores how the mob once made its fortunes. Ace Rothstein’s character is played by Robert De Niro, who is a Jewish Gambler and makes up the picture with his professionalism.

It is Scorsese’s area of expertise in illustrating the action behind mob mechanics and real-life casino work. The flick is an authentic experience for someone who likes to see what actually happens and how to run a crooked Casino.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (20)

The narration by the cast is ideal, and it explains the scams behind those close door rooms filled with cash in Sin City.

Martin Scorsese is an artist, and we have seen his other work, like Goodfellas and The Godfather, but in Casino, he put it all together meticulously. The bland but shaded cinematography, unique editing, a granular script, and skilled performances by the actors. It is one of his best movies in Hollywood, a definite recommendation.

Carlito’s Way

Among the four friends (Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Brian De Palma), Brian has always been a rouge in filmmaking. Maybe because of this, he has fewer hits and no Oscars.

For many, he is an alpha among the four. Carlito’s Way is on power with Heat when it comes to the list of movies that can be revisited again, a grainy flick that checks many of the major boxes for a crime-heist movie.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (21)

The brain has already told me that it is one of his best works. Just like Heat, we see Al Pacino as a Puerto Rican ex-con who is on parole with the help of his crooked lawyer, Sean Penn, with fake receding hair.

Carlito only wants to have a straight life, get his girlfriend back and live happily in the sunset, but it is not as easy as it sounds. Watch the movie to find out what actually happens in the movie.

  • Released in:1993
  • Runtime:2h 24m

The Usual Suspects

When The Usual Suspects came out in 1995, it felt like something out of this world. The noir flick is flawless from start to end and gives you constant punches of thrill and satisfaction. The plot is tight, but still, it provides fresh air to the characters.

The hook story is a bedtime take for the terrifying underworld thugs about a crime Don so legendary that the mere call of his name can make their pants piss.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (22)

The finesse at which the story is being told and Singer’s vision is all very streamlined. The aura of the characters takes away all the primitive thoughts a viewer has and sets them up for a suspending finish.

The star of the movie Kevin Spacey got an Oscar for his mind-twisting games in the movie. Just watch the movie. You’ll know what I am talking about.

  • Released in:1995
  • Runtime:1h 46m
  • IMDB Score:8.5
  • Cast: Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, Chazz Palminteri, Kevin Pollak, Pete Postlethwaite, Giancarlo Esposito, Dan Hedaya, Suzy Amis Cameron, Carl Bressler, and many others

Training Day

Most of Michael Mann’s movies are manly. Look at Heat and Collateral. Both of the movies are about the fight between two cool dudes. The same goes for Training Day; Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington are very much capable of portraying the same thing in a good cop, bad cop vibe.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (23)

The movie is penned by serious David Ayer, and we have seen his excellent writing skills in 2012’s End of Watch. He wants to explore the lows of the streets and cartels, places so profound that even the cops do not wish to enter.

Training Day ideally puts the whole plot into a noir visualization. It’s a fantasy where one man likes to take the law into his own hands and can go to any measure to fulfill that.

  • Released in:2001
  • Runtime:2h 2m
  • IMDB Score:7.7

Drive

The neo-noir classic “Drive” by Nicolas Winding Refn replaces the practical reality of “Heat” with a more poetic portrayal of organized criminal violence. However, “Drive” is arguably the most overtly romantic movie of this type, in contrast to Michael Mann’s movie with its slightly undeveloped love storylines.

In his role as a stuntman as a getaway driver for criminals who don’t want to be caught off guard, Ryan Gosling portrays a part-time stuntman. Without the aux connection and mint box, he’s like Uber Black for bank robbers.

27 Movies Like Heat That You Need to Watch - OtakuKart (24)

Gosling’s character is so reclusive that he doesn’t even have a name; the credits just refer to him as “Driver.” This is quite the noir-type reversal, especially in light of the motormouthed protagonists who invented the genre.

In the middle of complete chaos, Ryan Gosling courted Carey Mulligan’s heartfelt single mother. To further enhance the atmosphere of this laconic love affair, the players even worked together to edit their own lines.

‘Drive’ is a good entertainer, it puts Ryan Gosling on the radar, and his character goes to lengths to protect the one whom he loves. Things we do for love, right? This a definite recommendation.

Hell or High Water

The only true distinction between an “anti-western” like “Hell or High Water” and a neo-noir like Michael Mann’s “Heat” is similar to that between Taylor Swift, the pop singer, and Taylor Swift, the country star: Cowboy boots are worn by one.

However, filmmaker David Mackenzie’s outstanding anti-western two steps into area “Heat” and its clones don’t broach: politics. Modern Westerns are basically just noirs with a twang.

If you need a refresher, that was the time when large banks made so many home loans that the whole economy collapsed when common people were buried by their own risky investments.

The movie focuses on Chris Pine and Ben Foster portray siblings attempting to level the playing field and rescue the family farm by taking on those allegedly exploitative banks against that bigger backdrop, basically stealing to look out for the mortgage. The grizzled sheriff sent to stop them is portrayed by Jeff Bridges.

Even though this movie is explicitly political, it adheres to the most humanist “Heat” convention: you support everyone, regardless of what color hat they wear.

L.A. Confidential

This contemporary film masquerading as a noir from the golden age of flat-foots and private d#ks could also be your cup of tea if you enjoy hard-boiled detective stories featuring a large ensemble cast of iconic Hollywood actors and a twisting L.A.-based criminal narrative.

The plot is not just about good vs. evil; it also has many other components, like passion, insight, avarice, friendship, and, of course, love. These components combined to make the movie more than entertaining to watch.

The plot involves three detectives from LAPD who are investigating numerous homicides. While they are looking for clues and getting closer slowly, they get to know all the corruption in their own department.

The photography is bold and fashionable, and it is ideally suited to the plot and genre. A strong musical soundtrack is also helpful, and one of the greatest cinema composers of all time has provided one that is appropriately eerie.

He hasn’t created a finer movie, and in my opinion, Curtis Hansen’s greatest direction of his whole career. The picture has a lot of style, and the way it balances everything is so beautifully done. It is superb filmmaking that deserves a watch.

Public Enemies

Public Enemies like The Untouchables crossed with Heat, Michael Mann’s 1995. The plot has Johnny Depp portrays renowned 1930s bank robber John Dillinger, who led his band of thieves known as the “public enemies” to loot banks throughout the nation.

Depp is once again in a serious role. He robs banks and distributes the cash to the underprivileged. Christian Bale, who recently starred in one of the greatest action pictures of all time, does a great job as FBI agent Melvin Pervis on the opposite side of the law.

This one is a great watch, with excellent acting, clever dialogue, and superb direction by Michael Mann. Even supporting characters like Pretty Boy Floyd are allowed to stand out, along with Depp, Bale, and Cotillard, who all excel in their own parts. Even well-known criminals like Frank Nitti occasionally appear in Chicago.

It was not well received by the critics and by the fans when it got released. But it is one of the best cop and criminal movies, a good thrilling watch.
