What is Instant Messenger (IM)?

What do I need to do to IM a librarian?
If you already have an IM account, simply add us to your buddy list and then open a chat with us. If you do not want to download any software, you can use AIM Express.

Will a librarian answer right away, or will I have to wait?
Patrons visiting the library in person will have priority. However, we will answer your question as soon as we are able, on a first-come, first-served basis. If you aren't receiving an answer, feel free to give us a call at 650-829-3862, email us at, (link to our website, Email us) or stop by the Reference Desk.

I have a question about my library card account. Should I be concerned about giving my personal information to library staff on IM?

When providing virtual reference, South San Francisco Public Library will only collect minimum personal information necessary to answer the questions. This information may include, but is not limited to: library card number, email address, phone number or last name. This information will not be stored or shared. The South San Francisco Public Library respects its patrons' privacy, but it cannot guarantee the privacy of electronic communications, or information stored electronically. Patrons are not to submit sensitive information to the library via Instant Messaging.

What kind of questions can I ask the library?

Appropriate questions should be factual or short research questions that can be quickly answered. For matters regarding your library account such as fines, lost books, overdue materials, or renewals, please call 650-829-3860 during open hours. Examples of questions that you can ask:

  • Do you have the book "1984"?
  • Who was the 26th president of the US?
  • Can you help me locate a film entitled, "Triumph of the Will"?
  • Can you hold an item for me?
  • Who invented the x-ray?

Consultation, advice, or instruction is NOT provided by the Reference Staff via Instant Messaging. In the event that a patron is seeking appropriate, but in-depth research, the IM Librarian may refer the patron to other forms of reference such as in-person, or to a subject specialist. For homework help please go to www.ssflibrary.net . Your library card number may be required to access the site.
